BSF Newsletter: September 2007
In This Issue

Typically, the summer is a time of quiet reflection and, most importantly, family vacations. The BSF Marketing Committee took advantage of this "quiet period" to create a new Marketing and Communications Plan and an external awareness campaign designed to increase the visibility of the BSF on the international stage. The first step in this journey will take place at the Q3 event in London. The goal is to leverage the collective recognition of some of our individual member companies to increase the visibility of the BSF.

Special thanks to Matt Ablott at the London office of our public relations agency "rebranded MiLiberty after a recent acquisition" for his efforts in securing a number of interviews with leading U.K.-based publications.

As always, I welcome your thoughts on the BSF's marketing activities. Recently, I re-located from Antwerp, Belgium to Ottawa, Canada and can now be reached at greg.owens@alcatel-lucent.com.

All the best,

Greg Owens
Chair, BSF Marketing Committee
Market Development Manager, Alcatel-Lucent

BSF Q3 2007 Meeting
September 19-20, 2007
London, UK

Hosted by:

The focus of this meeting is "Monetizing the IP Network" and the two-day event will include presentations and interactive discussions on:

  • Networks and Content: The growing need to adopt a flexible business model will be balanced against the network operator's requirement to protect voice and other traditional revenues whilst allowing for the deployment of new IP technologies in a controlled way and without jeopardizing market value.
  • Cross-Media Content: What issues need to be considered when taking content and making it available for different platforms (e.g., TV, PC and mobile devices)?
  • Content: The role of IPTV and Internet TV: Consumer demand for accessing content anywhere at any time is a direct driver for technology vendors to provide solutions that seamlessly enable the convergence of services across multiple screens for both the end user and the service provider.
  • Advertising: The advertising industry is being dislocated by non-traditional forms of video delivery such as IPTV, Internet TV, and mobile TV - which are all enablers for greater levels of interactivity, personalization, and reporting metrics. As these services gain wider acceptance it is important to understand what implications this may have for all players within the end-to-end broadband value chain.
  • Personal Video Recorder (PVR): Gaining in popularity owing to the "freedom" that they provide, most PVR offerings in Europe are currently based on dedicated hardware with an integrated hard disc. Unfortunately, this also results in significant hardware costs. Time-shifting functionalities are considered a threat for some programme suppliers within the content industry, particularly where it is still heavily dependent on advertising revenues.

    BSF Q4 2007 Meeting
    December 5-6, 2007
    Sunnyvale, California

    Hosted by:

The theme of the Q4 meeting is Content, with planned discussions on user generated content, immersive content, content management and related topics.

    OVUM White Paper
A discussion paper based on the results of a joint research project completed with Ovum - entitled "Unmet Consumer Desires and the Service Provider Opportunity" - is now available on the BSF web site BSF White Papers. The survey was conducted with North American service providers and consumers, with a focus on home networking.

    BSF Opinion Note
A BSF "Opinion Note" is also available on the web site, highlighting some of the compelling service provider opportunities that are outlined in the OVUM report. The BSF believes that great potential exists for service providers to offer a broader range of services and, as a result, redefine themselves as "value-added service providers". This can only be accomplished by collaborating with other players in the value chain. Service providers who are unwilling to change run the risk of becoming irrelevant in this space and, instead, will be relegated to providing access with appropriate quality of service (QoS).

The BSF in Canada's Capital City
The BSF Q2 meeting was held in Ottawa on June 6-7. Hosted by Nortel, the event focused on "Advanced Applications". The meeting was attended by nearly 40 people, representing 17 companies from across North America and Europe (including Casero, Juniper Networks, Mariner Partners, Microsoft, Nokia Siemens Networks, Telekom Austria, and CNIA). Attendees were treaded to presentations from Nortel, Bell Alliant, Global Mentoring Solutions, Thomson, Sony, IBM, Espial, and NDS. Two other industry fora -- the ATIS and the TMF -- gave interesting presentations on how they would like to work with the BSF in the future. Finally, Alcatel-Lucent, Casero and NDS lead workshops on the topic of "compelling and money-making advanced applications". The results of each were then shared with the entire group.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the BSF issued an urgent call to action to the broadband services industry: let's work together to monetize the IP network and better define the business of broadband. The BSF believes that no one company - or sector - can solve this problem alone. Industry players must work together to create a plan that will help to monetize the IP network. The issue of monetizing the IP network will be tackled again at our Q3 event, being held in London on September 19 and 20.
