The BSF Gets Down to Business; The BWG Means Business
For the most part, discussions around broadband services are technical in nature. How many Mb/s are required to deliver a high-quality standard definition video signal? How significantly will MPEG-4 and VC-1 benefit the industry?
While many intelligent and motivated people are working on these technical issues, who's helping to figure out the business benefits of these new services? That is, where are the opportunities for content, service and technology providers? What will be the next "killer application"? Is there even going to be a single killer app? Adding fuel to the fire is the overabundance of industry hype about new services that are coming in the future.
In the spirit of providing our membership (and the industry) with more information on the business of broadband, the Business Working Group has issued a new charter. In a nutshell, the objectives of the BWG are to:
Identify opportunities for profitable services built upon broadband infrastructure
Define the roles of all industry players in the supply chain focused on delivering the best possible customer experience
Propose business models for the different types of players in the broadband value chain
Identify commercial, standards-based or regulatory barriers to the development of an expanded broadband services market and work to recommend ways of removing any obstacles
The complete charter is available at BSF Business Working Group
Andrew Keevil from SupportSoft is the newly-appointed chair of the Business Working Group. He has spent the last few months working with BSF members to define the new charter. In addition, he has his thinking cap firmly in place, assembling a list of potential issues that can be tackled in the coming months.
As far as the BWG is concerned, Andrew firmly believes that the emphasis must remain commercially focused. That is, it is not to get caught up in technical issues. Sound interesting? If you want to influence the activities of the BWG and ensure that its goals are aligned with the goals of your organization, you have a few options for getting involved:
Attend the upcoming Q3 meeting in Amsterdam, where Andrew will present the new focus of the BWG.
Send Andrew your ideas for topics that might be tackled by the BWG.
Get in touch with Andrew to express your interest and to see how you can get involved.
The broadband industry is undergoing fundamental change and, as a result, there is a lot of opportunity. Join the BWG and make a positive contribution to the BSF, your customers and the industry at large.
